How to Keep Yourself on Your Reps’ Radar
by Diane Christiansen Coaching
Ever feel like you’re missing out on auditions on which your agent or manager could be sending you? Do you watch TV shows, films, or commercials and think, “Hey! Why didn’t I go in for this part?” It may be as simple as not being on your reps’ radar. How to fix that? Whether you’re in Los Angeles, New York, or anywhere in between, read on to find out how!
Agencies and management firms always have a few people in each category, including yours. If your reps get a casting notice and it specifies to submit only their top one or two actors within a certain category – for example: male, 18 to 22 to play younger, nerdy but cute – instead of going into their client files to look at everyone in that category, they’re going to send in the one or two people that pop to the top of their heads. So now, what you have to do is make sure that you’re always on their minds when your category is called.
The simplest way to do this is to send emails with updates on what you’re doing, about once every 6 weeks. Tell your manager when you have a new private acting coach or register for a top rated acting class or go to a casting director workshop. Let your commercial agents know when you’ve booked a co-star on a sitcom and let your theatrical agent know when you’ve booked a big commercial. If your manager or agent is on Twitter, follow them, tag them when you tweet about how you nailed it in your latest callback. Make sure they see your name and face whenever you have exciting news to share.
If you’ve tried all of this and it doesn’t seem to help, schedule a time to drop by their office and have a face-to-face meeting to figure out what you need to do in order to start auditioning more. It could be your photo! Sometimes all it takes is showing up to keep you fresh in their minds.
And with the holidays coming up, don’t forget to give them an appropriate gift to say thanks!
