"Couldn't be more grateful for the practical and empowering advice I received.
I left thinking-- That. Was. Incredible. Truly, I felt like my thinking was completely shifted,
and I am now so excited to get started." -Rachel Tow
Nearly every actor we know who’s dissatisfied with where they are in their career says the same thing: I just want to be working. I want to be a working actor. Want to be working?
What is it these actors aren’t doing that working actors are?
Any of these hit home?
Working actors spend time every single day on their acting career, and turn their craft into their business. They know that they‘re in control and take action - research the players, follow up on leads, and stay in contact with their industry relationships.
Struggling actors are at a loss with what to do each day to further their acting career. They may have the intention to work on their acting business, but they lack the drive and knowledge to go about it. Or they may have learned something to do once, but never actually implemented it out of fear.
Working actors are grateful for the opportunities that come their way. They express gratitude and exude positivity. They know what projects to say yes to, and, more importantly, what to turn down. Every business decision they make is in alignment with their integrity and their value systems.
Struggling actors say yes to EVERYTHING. They’re scarcity-minded and afraid to say No. They frequently experience burnout from not prioritizing and having too many projects on their plate. They only see what they don’t have, and blame their agent, blame their parents, blame the traffic or the train. They do not consider a change or seek new knowledge, rather they complain about “the Business.”
Working actors invest in their education, and take classes to learn how to effectively run their marketing, how to network and make lasting impressions. They practice their pitches, visualize their red carpet moments, and see and plan for what’s to come ahead. They look to the future with enthusiasm, because they understand they’re creating the design of it.
Struggling actors also take classes, mainly to work on their craft but they get stuck in class-land because it feels safe. They’re also stuck in reactive mode 24/7. They function paycheck to paycheck and gig to gig. They cannot see the larger picture. They’ve lost sight of what drives them, what makes their heart sing - their artistic reason. And when that happens to the artist, the soul suffers deeply downward; a cyclical spiral into the infinitesimal darkness.
